A year after floating the idea of improving public transportation, Space X and Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk has unveiled the Hyperloop!
The solar-powered city-to-city transit system would take passengers and cars from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just 30 minutes.
The Hyperloop would transport people via aluminum pods enclosed inside of steel tubes. The tubes are mounted on columns spaced 50 to 100 yards apart and the pods inside would travel up to 800 mils per hour. On top of all of this, the pods would be able to ferry cars as well as people. Musk states:
"You just drive on, and the pod departs.”
The Hyperloop comes just as Musk grew disenchanted with the plans for California’s high speed rail system which he felt was costly, slow, and inefficient. The Hyperloop’s suspended nature would also avoid many land rights issues since farmer’s would still be able to access their land between the columns and would follow along the already existing I-5 freeway.
As far as safety is concerned, the safe distance between pods would be about 5 miles, leaving room for 70 pods in the tubes at once. Each pod has an emergency break and would have less lateral acceleration, which it what tends to make people motion sick.
The tube system is designed to link cities less than 1,000 miles apart that have high amounts of traffic between them. Musk elaborates:
"It makes sense for things like L.A. to San Francisco, New York to D.C., New York to Boston. Over 1,000 miles, the tube cost starts to become prohibitive, and you don’t want tubes every which way. You don’t want to live in Tube Land."
Do you think the Hyperloop is a viable transportation option? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments down below!
